The weekend snow storm has left its traces in all our driveways. And if you’ve been out there shoveling, it’s all probably come back to you now… how difficult and exhausting winter can get, when you have to go clean up the snow again and again. As tedious a task as it may be, it doesn’t have to be as tiring! Here’s my quick fix and some safety tips to make this winter snow removal, a little less painful!
You’ve already heard it a million times, but I’ll say it again…
#1. Dress Warm – Yep, it’s common sense, but surprisingly so many people don’t realize that shoveling takes a while, and they need to be in layers in order to brace the cold temperatures! Don’t skip out on a scarf or wear thin gloves. If you’re planning on getting the job done efficiently, then it starts with dressing appropriately.
#2. Pick the Right Tools – You need to make sure you have the right shovel, if you want the job done! Shovels come in all types and sizes, but you need to make sure that it’s strong and sturdy. Snow can weigh up to almost 45lbs per lift, so you’re in for quite the workout! Make sure you choose a shovel that’s easy for you to lift, and offers a wide base to scoop up the white stuff!
#3. Have a Plan – Don’t start shoveling all over the place. You’ll need a plan to clear the driveway and the path along your house. Make sure you’re not trying to move the snow too far, and also be careful that you don’t pile it up in a place and then need to move it again. Map it out in your head, and then break it up in sections.
#4. Take Breaks – Don’t attempt the entire driveway at once. You might be tempted to just ‘get the job done’, but you might also get hurt trying to do that. When you’ve sectioned off your driveway, take breaks in between areas. You might also want to warm up with tea, coffee or hot chocolate while you’re resting!
#5. Lift With the Knees – It’s common weight lifting advice, get your legs into it! You don’t want to strain your back. Especially if you’re going to be shoveling for a while. Shoveling can be quite a work out, and you don’t want to be benched right at the beginning of the season!
Smart Snow Tip – Wet snow sticks to the shovel, making your job a lot harder. Spray your shovel with cooking spray, and the snow won’t stick anymore!
Good luck clearing those sidewalks and driveways!
