Erindale

Well known as the home of Mississauga’s campus of the University of Toronto, and for its acres of beautiful park area, Erindale is a popular residential community in the southern end of the city. Adorned with natural beauty and remarkable architecture, this neighborhood is a treat to visit, and a privilege to live in.

The area which is now known as Erindale first came into being in 1822. A land speculator, by the name of Thomas Racey, bought the land to build a mill and establish a village. When Racey was unable to meet his payments, the land was auctioned off to eager settlers. By 1827, the first signs of the village had come to life. There was a saw and flour mill in operation, a post office, a church, and a residential community taking shape. Throughout history, Erindale has had many names. At first it was called Toronto, but soon named Credit once the post office was established. In the mid 1830’s the area was known as Springfield, and then later as Springfield-on-the-Credit. Finally, in 1890, named after the estate of an early influential settler, Reverend James Magrath, Erindale came into being. He had named his estate “Erindale” in reference to his homeland – Ireland.
