One of the more established and quieter neighborhoods on the east side of Mississauga, Dixie offers a home with historical charm. Well known for its beautiful architecture reflecting early 19th century construction and an abundance of natural beauty that surrounds the area, Dixie has always been a favorite. Ideally located close to Toronto, Etobicoke and Mississauga’s city centre, this neighborhood carries its own identity, while closely linking you to the rest of the region surrounding it.
The area is named in honour of a prominent Welsh pioneer doctor, Beaumont Wilson Bowen Dixie, who paid for the establishment of the Union Chapel – one of the most well known religious places in Mississauga. While other areas of Mississauga were established through business, Dixie reveled in its importance as a place of worship, founded in 1816, the Union Chapel has been a great source of pride for the community. Although in the early days, Dixie’s close proximity to Cooksville prevented it from developing a strong commercial character of its own, it did prosper as an agricultural produce-oriented community, with garden markets scattered across the Dundas Highway.
